Great news, turkey trotters: Thanksgiving is going to come with cool temperatures and breezy conditions.

Fall appears to be finally happening in Austin, with two cold fronts moving into the area this week. Tuesday’s high temperatures are expected to be in the 70s and 60s, with lows in the 50s and 40s, after a northern cold front made its way across Austin Monday night, according to the National Weather Service.

“We kind of have a roller coaster of temperatures going on in the next 72 hours or so,” said Matthew Brady, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Temperatures will climb into the mid 80s on Wednesday, and with mostly sunny skies, it’s going to be pretty warm out. But a second northern cold front arrives Wednesday night and Thursday morning, pulling temperatures down into the 50s and 60s.

At 9:30 a.m., when the 34th annual ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot kicks off at the Long Center, Brady said runners can expect temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s with 30 mph wind gusts.

Temperatures will rise throughout the day, to a high near 65 degrees with partly to mostly cloudy skies. For once, Austin is actually going to be having a normal-for-this-time-of-year holiday. In fact, we might even be below average!

“The average temperature is usually around 67 degrees for Thanksgiving,” Brady said, adding that the record high temperature for Thanksgiving in Austin was 86 degrees in 1967. “Thank goodness we’re not going to be near there."

We won’t be close to the record low temperature, either, which was 28 degrees in 1938. Lows on Thanksgiving will be in the 40s.

Wednesday night’s cold front is expected to last into next week, which, hallelujah! Dare we declare the start of sweater season?!
