A lot happened in Austin politics this year. And as we prepare for 2025, we have newly elected local officials and new initiatives going into effect. Here are the dates you need to remember in the new year:

✅ Approved Ballot Propositions Are Already in Effect.

Austin voters approved two ballot measures – one to increase teacher pay and shrink Austin Independent School District’s budget deficit and another to fund child care in Travis County – in November. Both measures are already expected to cause an increase in property tax bills this winter.

📅 January 6 – Austin City Council Swearing In Ceremony

Five seats on Austin City Council were up for election in November, and after a December runoff, three new members, District 6’s Krista Laine, District 7’s Mike Siegel, and District 10’s Marc Duchen will join the dais next month. District 2’s Vanessa Fuentes and District 4’s José “Chito” Vela were both re-elected.

Austin City Council members and Mayor Kirk Watson will be sworn in at 6 p.m. on Jan. 6, according to city officials. The ceremony is open to the public and will be streamed on ATXN.

📄 January 14 – First Day of the 2025 Texas Legislative Session

It’s that time again, y’all. The 89th Texas legislative session will kick off on Jan. 14. The Austin area is represented by 11 state representatives and five state senators. Check online to see who represents you.

🤝 January 30 – First Austin City Council Meeting of 2025

Austin City Council members will meet for their first regular meeting of the new year on Jan. 30. The meeting’s agenda has not yet been released.

✏️ January 30 – First Austin Independent School District Board Meeting of 2025

The Austin Independent School District Board will have its first meeting of the new year on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m., and will be the first for new board member Fernanda Lucas de Urioste, who won the runoff election for an at-large seat.
