Austin City Council meetings are about to be in full swing again after a summer break and budget negotiations. Council meetings happen twice a month on Thursdays.

The last August meeting is being held today.

Here’s what you need to know about speaking during a council meeting:

✍️ How To Register

You can register in-person or online to speak on a specific agenda item during a city council meeting. Public comment on agenda items can be done in-person or remotely.

Forms to register to speak are available on the Council Meeting Information Center webpage the Monday before a regular council meeting at 10 a.m. The window to register closes at noon on Wednesdays.

Remote speakers will receive an email with information on how to call into the meeting.

If you’re registering to speak in-person, you can also do that at kiosks in Austin City Hall’s atrium. The registration window for in-person speakers opens after noon on Wednesdays and closes 45 minutes before the meeting is scheduled to start.

🗣️ How To Speak About Whatever You Want

During each regular meeting, Austin City Council allows up to 10 people to address them for three minutes at noon about whatever topics they choose. To register to do this, you must contact the City Clerk’s Office by phone or online, and include the meeting you plan to attend, your name, contact information, and if you plan to speak remotely or not.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. three weeks before the meeting and ends at 4:30 p.m. two weeks before the meeting.

📣 Go get civically engaged!
