Passover is quickly approaching and if you’re like me, you may just now be getting your plans in order. The Jewish holiday starts Saturday night and runs through April 20, and Austin has plenty of ways to celebrate. Here’s where to start:
🍲 Get Takeout From Aba Austin.
Aba Austin, 1011 S. Congress Ave., is offering a dinner for two take-home special. For $117.95, the restaurant sends you home with hummus, a salad, matzo ball soup, a slow-braised short rib, heirloom chicken thighs, and a sticky date cake. Place your order by April 10. You can also make a reservation for April 12 or 13 and enjoy matzo ball soup, the short rib, and an apple matzo kugel at the restaurant.
🍽️ Sign Up for One of L’Oca d’Oro’s Seders.
L’Oca d’Oro, 1900 Simond Ave., is hosting two seders this year, on April 14 and 15. The dinners are $100 per person and include deviled eggs, matzo ball soup, smoked wagyu brisket, coconut macaroons, and chocolate toffee pecan matzo, among its vast Passover menu. Each night will be led by Rabbi Neil Blumofe and Cantor Sarah Avner, respectively, and the dinners are open to all faiths.
🍪 Pick Up Treats From Casper’s Fermentables.
Casper’s Fermentables, 4715 S. Lamar Blvd., always has yummy Jewish treats available including black and white cookies, rugelach, and sourdough challahs. (Those are our top choices if you’re not planning on keeping Passover, of course.) The bagel shop often does specials for Jewish holidays, so keep an eye out when you pop in!
🛒 The Far West H-E-B Will Be Your Best Friend.
The H-E-B grocery store near the Jewish Community Center in Northwest Austin at 7015 Village Center Drive is always stocked for Passover. Last year, I was greeted with a massive matzo display and ended up bringing five pounds of it home along with some coconut macaroons. 😋
👋 Happy seder-ing!
