Your Guide to October 2024 in Austin

00:00:00

Welcome to October! It’s the month that exudes orange and includes the city’s biggest music festival, pumpkin patches, and Halloween, among so much more, of course. Here’s everything you need to know this month:

🎤 Avoid the Area Around Zilker Park Until Mid-Month.

Austin City Limits Music Festival runs Oct. 4-6 and 11-13. Zilker Park and its surrounding areas, like along Barton Springs Road and South Lamar Boulevard, will be packed with thousands and thousands of festival goers. Expect traffic nearby, and if you’re not going, we recommend hanging out in East or North Austin to avoid getting stuck on the road.

🚶 No ACL Fest Ticket? No Problem.

It’s no secret that ACL Fest is expensive. If you decided to save your money this year, we have a pro tip for you. Every year, this writer sees people listening to the final performances of the night from Lady Bird Lake on paddle boards or in kayaks and you should be one of them! It’s so Austin and cool! Just make sure you're done by 10 p.m. – Lady Bird Lake and the Butler Hike and Bike Trail have a curfew that lasts from then until 5 a.m., the city said.

🎃 Thrift Your Halloween Costume.

We love the earth, the earth loves us, etc. Be kind to her this Halloween and check your local thrift store for costume materials before buying something brand new that you’ll likely only wear once.

⭐ Go As Something ‘Austin’ for Halloween.

We recommend an ultra-creative costume AKA going as a local inside joke for the big day, because we’re nerds, OK?! Ideas include: Dress up as a Tesla Cybertruck, the wishbone bridge that’s being constructed on the hike and bike trail, or UT’s entry into the SEC conference. Please let us know how you execute these!

📅 Make a Plan for Pumpkin Nights.

Think Trail of Lights, but it’s just tons of pumpkins. Nikki DaVaughn, City Cast Austin’s podcast host, highly recommends Pumpkin Nights at Pioneer Farms, which runs through Oct. 31. Tickets start at $12 for kids.
