Where To Celebrate Black History Month in Austin

We’re just about halfway through February and if you haven’t gotten out to a Black History Month event yet, we’ve got you covered:

Celebrate a Black Cycling Icon

Hyperreal Film Club, 301 Chicon St., is screening “Major Taylor: Champion of the Race” on Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The documentary follows the life of Major Taylor, a cyclist who set more than 20 world records in speed cycling during the Jim Crow era. The screening is free to attend.

Go for the Crown at a Downtown Pageant

Pride in Black ATX and Diamond Dior Davenport are hosting the Mr. & Miss Austin Black Pride pageant at RAIN on 4th, 217 W. 4th St., on Feb. 18. Registration to participate in the pageant starts at 8 p.m. and is $100. The pageant starts at 10 p.m. and includes talent, Q&A, and formal wear categories.

Dance It Out

Dougherty Arts Center, 1110 Barton Springs Road, is hosting its annual “Say That Again” dance event Feb. 19-21 and 26-28. The event includes a presentation of street and contemporary dance, live hip-hop, and spoken word performances. You can watch or join in on the dancing! Tickets start at $35.

Get Festive With the Kids

George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center, 1165 Angelina St., is hosting its Black History Month Kid's Day on Feb. 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free to attend and includes arts and crafts, video games, Buffalo Soldiers, and a quilting workshop.

Finish February With a Block Party

Toast to Black history with a block party at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, 1106 E. 11th St., on Feb. 28. Celebrate Black ATX Block Party starts at 1 p.m. and includes live music, food trucks, DJs, shopping, art, and more. The party is free to attend but you need to RSVP online.
