Memorial Day, the day that we mourn and honor the country’s deceased service men and women, is on Monday and marks the first three-day weekend of the summer. Here’s what you need to know:
☔ Rain Is Possible This Weekend
Today and Saturday will be dry with temperatures peaking just below 100 degrees, National Weather Service forecasters say. After a cloudy Friday, the sun will come out on Saturday before rain chances move into the Austin area.
Sunday has a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with temperatures ranging from the high 90s during the day to a low around 75 degrees.
Memorial Day itself has a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day and into the evening with high temperatures in the 90s.
🛟 Water Safety Is Key
If you’re planning on being one of the many Austinites spending the weekend on a body of water, make sure you’re doing so safely. Texas Game Wardens issued a reminder this week about wearing life jackets, staying sober, boat safety, and more.
👙 Not All Pools Are Open
Wanting to spend the weekend at a city pool? Make sure to double-check that the pool you’re hoping to visit is open. Many don’t open until May 30 or in June. Barton Springs, Bartholomew, Big Stacy, Deep Eddy, and Springwoods pools are all open, though, and Colony Park pool opens on Saturday. Our biggest tip is to get out to whichever pool you’re visiting as early as you can. It’s going to be busy!
🥶 Stay Inside
You absolutely do not have to spend any time outside this weekend – Austin has plenty to do in air-conditioned buildings. 😌 Here’s some events to get you started:
- Visit the Texas Science & Natural History Museum for free
- See “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” at Paramount Theatre
- Watch a barbecue documentary at Bullock Texas State History Museum
- Shop at Blue Genie Art Bazaar
- See a play, view art, and listen to panels about peri/menopause at Ground Floor Theatre
