Black History Month is here, y’all, and Austin has tons to do. You have all of February to celebrate and learn. To start you off, here are some of our favorite events:
🥳 Black History Month Kick-Off Block Party at the Carver Museum
Start February off right with the annual Black History Month Kick-Off Block Party, at the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center, 1165 Angelina St. The party runs 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 1 and includes dancing, music, crafts, vendors, and light snacks. RSVP for free online.
- The Carver Museum is hosting lots of really great events all month long. There’s the opening reception for the exhibit “Second Sight” on Feb. 8, HBCU Day at the museum on Feb. 15, and Kids Day on Feb. 22, just to name a few!
🎨 Color and Collage at Austin Public Library’s Cepeda Branch
Head to Austin Public Library’s Cepeda Branch, 651 North Pleasant Valley Road, on Feb. 8 for coloring and collaging. The library is providing pages of historical Black figures to color, and you can also make a collage, inspired by themes of Black identity and culture. The art starts at 2 p.m. and is free to attend.
🛍️ Art in ATX: Black History Month Market at Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co.
Support Black-owned businesses at the Black History Month Market at Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co., 1305 West Oltorf St., on Feb. 15. Shopping kicks off at noon and includes live music, and a $20 flower arrangement workshop. The event is free to attend.
🎉 Black History Month Celebration at Austin Public Library’s Terrazas Branch
Austin Public Library’s Terrazas Branch, 1105 East César Chávez St., is hosting an afternoon celebration on Feb. 22. Expect music, crafts, light snacks and drinks, and watercolor sneaker art. The fun starts at 1:30 p.m. and is free to attend.
