The holiday season is officially in full swing! Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, starts just hours after you finish sorting through your Halloween candy.
Día de los Muertos is celebrated Nov. 1-2 when altars, or ofrendas, filled with colorful flowers, photos, food, and trinkets are put out to welcome the spirits of family members and friends who’ve passed.
Austin has plenty of Día de los Muertos events to try:
Head to the Oswaldo A. B. Cantu Pan American Recreation Center, 2100 E. 3rd St., on Saturday for free live music, art installations, face painting, sugar skull workshops, a community altar, and more. There will be food trucks and the event runs 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Mexic-Arte Museum’s Día de los Muertos event is on Saturday at Republic Square, 422 Guadalupe St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free to attend and includes the unveiling of a skull sculpture art installation. Live performances, vendors, and a pop-up graveyard are all part of the fun, too!
Moody Amphitheater’s two-day Día de los Muertos event starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and includes live music and dance performances, an artisan market, arts and crafts, and face painting. The amphitheater stage, 1111 Red River St., will be turned into a community ofrenda and attendees are encouraged to bring photos and other mementos to add to it.
Celebrate the Day of the Bones at Texas Science & Natural History Museum, 2400 Trinity St., on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.. The day includes face painting, a scavenger hunt, a Texas Folklórico performance, and coloring dinosaur skulls. Tickets are $6 for kids and $10 for adults.
