It’s happening! Bluebonnet season is here and we’ve gathered up our favorite tips for experiencing the flowers.
🪻 April Is Peak Bluebonnet Season.
While you may have seen some bluebonnets already popping up around town, their peak season doesn’t actually start until next week, according to Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Central and East Texas are considered the “bluebonnet belt” of the state, with lupine blooms expected to last through mid to late April.
Bluebonnets blossom in the spring after germinating over the fall. How awesome a bloom is is determined by rain and whether or not it's been a cooler spring, which slows down blooms.
👟 Watch Where You Step.
Bluebonnets, the Texas state flower, are the most special, and to be a true Texan, you’ve got to take photos surrounded by the seasonal blooms. They beautify our highways, trails, and parks and you need to not step on them or pick them. Respect the flowers when you head out to take your photos.
🪑 Squat With Your Eyes Peeled for Wildlife.
Make sure you squat down when you take your photos to get a good view of the flowers. And keep an eye out for critters!
⏰ Be Patient.
Bluebonnet season is forecasted to be less-than-stellar this year due to ongoing drought conditions and a lack of rain.
“Last fall’s drought influenced the number of little wildflower plants we have growing out there. I think we’ve had enough precipitation to give them a boost and get them blooming but it’s too late in the game to germinate new seeds which will affect the numbers of plants we have,” said Andrea DeLong-Amaya, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Horticulture Director.
