✏️ School is back in session today for Austin Independent School District, other districts’ school years are already underway, and I am a bit jealous – those first few days of a new year are so exciting! The notebooks and haircuts are fresh and it always feels like a chance to start anew. We want you – parents, guardians, whomever – to feel prepared going into the year, so we’ve got a few reminders for ya!
🚘 Don’t Forget About School Speed Limits.
It happens every fall. You’re driving along and wham, you’re in a school speed zone. “Oh right, these are back,” you say to yourself with a sigh. Watch for 20 mph speed limits near campuses in the mornings and afternoons during drop-offs and pick-ups, and only use your phones hands-free. And try to remember, the limits are there to keep kids safe!
📱 Check Your School’s Phone Policy.
AISD lets each school create its own cell phone rules based on the district’s policy. Under the policy, students can have their phones on campus but are not allowed to use them during the school day, district officials said. Even if a campus bans phones, students will be able to use their devices before and after school.
The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders told families this summer that it will be enforcing a “no phone” policy this school year. Lake Travis ISD students in pre-K through eighth grade will not be allowed to use their phones, either.
👕 Brush Up on the Dress Code.
Back-to-school clothes shopping is one of America’s great annual pastimes. And AISD’s dress code is pretty straightforward: Keep your privates and stomach covered, and wear a shirt, pants or an equivalent, like a skirt, dress, sweatpants or shorts, and shoes. As long as you’re following those rules, you can wear hats, hoodies, leggings or yoga pants, ripped jeans, tank tops, halter tops, and athletic attire. (Did you know that tank tops with spaghetti straps are allowed?! High school Kelsey is screaming.) The district’s full dress code can be found online: austinisd.org.
Have a great school year, y’all!
