Moving, thinking about moving, and asking people how much their rent is are all beloved Austin pastimes. That’s why I couldn’t wait to ask KUT housing reporter Audrey McGlinchy for her thoughts on the best times to move within Austin and to the city in general.

Would You Move to Austin Right Now if You Didn’t Already Live Here?

“Oh, a great question. If I were making this decision in the summer, probably not. I have come to learn that I really don't like heat and hot weather. I don't know, if it were the dead of the summer, probably not.”

What Is the Best Time of Year To Move to Austin?

“November or December. That's when I tell friends to visit me. I'm like, ‘When you're freezing in your apartment in New York, come see me.’ And I think by design, that's probably the best time to move in Austin, like if you're moving from place to place.”

What Is Your Essential Austin Rule?

“I don't know if I would describe this as a rule, but it's something that I have learned to delight in in Austin, which is to talk to your barista. I moved to Austin from New York, and when I first moved here, I would go order something at a coffee shop and the barista would be like, ‘How's your day going?’ And I'd be like, ‘What do you want from me? Why would a stranger ever talk to me in such a kind way?’ I just love how friendly strangers are to each other here in Austin. It's not something that I really ever experienced growing up in the Northeast and living as an adult in the Northeast.”
